I did a load of sampling about 15 years ago and built up a half decent library. When I started writing the track I had a good look through them and found a couple that sounded alright. I had a mess about with them, playing them at different speeds etc.. (like you do).
Due to the Breakbeat nature of the samples, triggering them an octave lower than the original speed resulted in a pleasing down-tempo/dub feel. I thought I'd try and write a tune around the samples at this slower speed.
(I think) my oblique strategy for this process was 'go to an extreme, come part way back', so I decided to up the pitch to only half an octave down. I then ran with this and built the rest of the track up from these samples.
